Ada Lim\u00f3n, the 24th U.S. poet laureate and the eighth woman in that role, will bring her approachable poetry and focus on nature to her first reading as laureate September 29 at the Library of Congress.<\/p>\n

The laureate position \u201cbrings attention to the art of poetry, and literature more generally,\u201d says Kathy Fagan, herself a poet and an English professor at Ohio State University. \u201cIt\u2019s a symbol to other nations that ours values the ancient art of poetry.\u201d<\/p>\n

In July, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced Limo\u0301n\u2019s appointment as U.S. poet laureate, and Limo\u0301n\u2019s term began earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer accessible, engaging poems ground us in where we are and who we share our world with,\u201d Hayden said. \u201cThey speak of intimate truths, of the beauty and heartbreak that is living, in ways that help us move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lim\u00f3n has published six books of poetry, including a 2018 volume titled The Carrying, which won the prestigious National Book Critics Circle Award. Raised in California, Lim\u00f3n now lives in Lexington, Kentucky, where she hosts a poetry podcast called The Slowdown. She is the first Latina and Mexican American in the role.<\/p>\n

Fagan, whose six poetry collections include Bad Hobby, says Lim\u00f3n\u2019s work is understandable for all kinds of readers.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer work is clear and tender and about the stuff of this world \u2014 animals, family, growing up as a girl,\u201d Fagan says. \u201cIt\u2019s what poetry wants to do \u2014 reach readers and bring them to see a new place in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lim\u00f3n\u2019s poem \u201cHow to Triumph Like a Girl,\u201d from the book Bright Dead Things, begins:<\/p>\n

\nhow they make it all look easy,
\nlike running 40 miles per hour
\nis as fun as taking a nap, or grass.
\nI like their lady horse swagger,
\nafter winning. Ears up, girls, ears up!\u201d<\/p>\n

Fagan is pleased to see a woman of color named to the prestigious post. Lim\u00f3n follows Joy Harjo, a Native American, in the post.<\/p>\n

Lim\u00f3n writes as beautifully about the environment as about animals, Fagan notes. In \u201cInstructions on Not Giving Up,\u201d from The Carrying, Lim\u00f3n writes of the bloom of spring:<\/p>\n

\u201cPatient, plodding, a green skin
\ngrowing over whatever winter did to us, a return
\nto the strange idea of continuous living despite
\nthe mess of us, the hurt, the empty. Fine then,
\nI\u2019ll take it, the tree seems to say, a new slick leaf
\nunfurling like a fist to an open palm, I\u2019ll take it all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lim\u00f3n says she looks forward to amplifying poetry\u2019s ability to restore humanity. \u201cAgain and again, I have been witness to poetry\u2019s immense power to reconnect us to the world, to allow us to heal, to love, to grieve, to remind us of the full spectrum of human emotion,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Poetry takes more effort than pop music, Fagan notes, but offers, especially with an accessible poet like Lim\u00f3n, a way to slow down and pay attention to what\u2019s important.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
