In 2004 she became the first woman to be awarded the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Pritzker-Prize\">Pritzker Architecture Prize<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h1\">Early life and career<\/h2>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">Hadid began her studies at the American University in\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Beirut\">Beirut<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Lebanon\">Lebanon<\/a>, receiving a bachelor\u2019s degree in mathematics. In 1972 she traveled to London to study at the Architectural Association, a major centre of progressive architectural thought during the 1970s. There she met the architects\u00a0<span id=\"ref944400\"><\/span><a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Elia-Zenghelis\">Elia Zenghelis<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<span id=\"ref944399\"><\/span><a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Rem-Koolhaas\">Rem Koolhaas<\/a>, with whom she would\u00a0<a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/collaborate\" data-term=\"collaborate\" data-type=\"MW\">collaborate<\/a>\u00a0as a partner at the Office of Metropolitan Architecture. Hadid established her own London-based firm, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), in 1979.<\/p>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">In 1983 Hadid gained international recognition with her competition-winning entry for\u00a0<span id=\"ref944401\"><\/span>The Peak, a leisure and recreational centre in\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Hong-Kong\">Hong Kong<\/a>. This design, a \u201chorizontal skyscraper\u201d that moved at a\u00a0<a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/dynamic\" data-term=\"dynamic\" data-type=\"MW\">dynamic<\/a>\u00a0diagonal down the hillside site, established her aesthetic: inspired by\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Kazimir-Malevich\">Kazimir Malevich<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/Suprematism\">Suprematists<\/a>, her aggressive geometric designs are characterized by a sense of fragmentation, instability, and movement. This fragmented style led her to be grouped with architects known as \u201cdeconstructivists,\u201d a classification made popular by the 1988 landmark exhibition \u201cDeconstructivist Architecture\u201d held at the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/museum-of-modern-art-institution\">Museum of Modern Art<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink autoxref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/New-York-City\">New York City<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">Hadid\u2019s design for The Peak was never realized, nor were most of her other radical designs in the 1980s and early \u201990s, including the Kurf\u00fcrstendamm (1986) in\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Berlin\">Berlin<\/a>, the D\u00fcsseldorf Art and Media Centre (1992\u201393), and the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink autoxref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Cardiff-Wales\">Cardiff<\/a>\u00a0Bay\u00a0<a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/dictionary\/Opera\" data-term=\"Opera\" data-type=\"EB\">Opera<\/a>\u00a0House (1994) in\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Wales\">Wales<\/a>. Hadid began to be known as a \u201cpaper architect,\u201d meaning her designs were too avant-garde to move beyond the sketch phase and actually be built. This impression of her was heightened when her beautifully rendered designs\u2014often in the form of exquisitely detailed coloured paintings\u2014were exhibited as works of art in major museums.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h1\">First built projects<\/h2>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">Hadid\u2019s first major built project was the\u00a0<span id=\"ref944402\"><\/span><a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Vitra-Fire-Station\">Vitra Fire Station<\/a>\u00a0(1989\u201393) in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Composed of a series of sharply angled planes, the structure resembles a bird in flight. Her other built works from this period included a housing project for IBA Housing (1989\u201393) in Berlin, the Mind Zone exhibition space (1999) at the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Millennium-Dome\">Millennium Dome<\/a>\u00a0in Greenwich, London, and the Land Formation One exhibition space (1997\u201399) in Weil am Rhein. The 85,000-square-foot (7,900-square-metre) centre, which opened in 2003, was the first American museum designed by a woman. Essentially a vertical series of cubes and voids, the museum is located in the middle of Cincinnati\u2019s downtown area. The side that faces the street has a translucent glass facade that invites passersby to look in on the workings of the museum and thereby contradicts the notion of the museum as an uninviting or remote space. She won a second Stirling Prize the following year for a sleek structure she conceived for Evelyn Grace Academy, a secondary school in London. Hadid\u2019s fluid undulating design for the Heydar Aliyev Center, a cultural centre that opened in 2012 in\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Baku\">Baku<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Azerbaijan\">Azerbaijan<\/a>, won the London Design Museum\u2019s Design of the Year in 2014. She was the first woman to earn that award\u2014which judges designs in architecture, furniture, fashion, graphics, product, and transportation\u2014and the design was the first from the architecture category. Her supporters contended that she was often subjected to controversies that her male counterparts were not. Her fantastic forms were often derided, and the expense and scale of many of her commissions were frequently ridiculed. Indeed, the problematic site for the London Aquatics Centre forced Hadid to scale back her design, while mounting protests, notably from preeminent Japanese architects, led her to scrap her plan altogether for the New National Stadium for the\u00a0<span id=\"ref1264246\"><\/span><a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Tokyo-2020-Olympic-Games\">2020 Olympics in Tokyo<\/a>\u00a0(the Olympics were later postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic). Further controversy followed after a 2014 report disclosed that some 1,000 foreign workers had died because of poor working conditions across construction sites in Qatar, where her Al Wakrah Stadium for the 2022\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/World-Cup-football\">World Cup<\/a>\u00a0was set to break ground. When asked about the deaths, Hadid objected to her responsibility as an architect to ensure safe working conditions, and her remarks were widely regarded as insensitive. An architecture critic of\u00a0<em>The New York Review of Books<\/em>\u00a0<a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/exacerbated\" data-term=\"exacerbated\" data-type=\"MW\">exacerbated<\/a>\u00a0the situation when he falsely claimed that 1,000 had died building her stadium, which had yet to break ground. Hadid filed a\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink autoxref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/defamation\">defamation<\/a>\u00a0lawsuit against the critic and publication. She later settled, accepting an apology and donating the undisclosed sum to a charity protecting labour rights.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"md-sentinel--spy-target\"><\/div>\n<section id=\"ref342061\" data-level=\"1\" data-has-spy=\"true\">\n<h2 class=\"h1\">Other projects and notable awards<\/h2>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">Hadid taught architecture at many places, including the Architectural Association,\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Harvard-University\">Harvard University<\/a>, the\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/University-of-Chicago\">University of Chicago<\/a>, and\u00a0<a class=\"md-crosslink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Yale-University\">Yale University<\/a>.
